Refinishing a guitar?

I have an ibanez electric guitar that is currently painted black. The paint is getting worn down and I was wondering how hard it would be to refinish it. I was thinking about sanding the paint off and giving it a natural finish, but it’s not a nice guitar so I’m sure its not very nice wood. So then i thought about putting veneer on the top and then just staining it. What would i need to do to accomplish this? When I read about finishing guitars online it seems very complicated, involving certain types of wood sealer and lacquer and all. All i want to do is put a natural finish on it. Whats the easiest way to do this myself?

Just buy some paint from Home Hardware.
