1. Record yourself on audio: Recording yourself on audio is a great way to hear how you are playing and learning on the guitar. Are you playing off tempo? Are you missing notes? Are your chords sounding crisp and clear when you strum your guitar? All of these guitar techniques and more can be auditory critiqued by yourself so that you can improve how you play on your instrument.
2. Record yourself on video: There’s nothing greater than visually watching yourself play your six string on video. Video is great for capturing all your visual technique. Video is also important to see your body posture. If you see yourself leaning to one side more often, or you’re slouched while playing your instrument, you can begin to correct your playing stance. This will ultimately help you to prevent guitar injuries such as tendonitis.

3. Have your guitar instructor critique your playing: Ask your guitar instructor for feedback as to how well you are learning or playing on the guitar. No one knows your learning and practice tendencies better than your guitar instructor. Just be ready to suck it up a little bit if you’re starting to think your getting good on the guitar and your instructor challenges you to where you could be on the guitar with more effort and discipline.
4. Get feedback after you perform: Musicians in general are some of the most self critical of there own playing. Have two sets of feedback criteria for when you play live. The first one is having your own personal feedback system, and the second is have random people who watched you play live critique your playing. Take your personal response to how well you played and compare it to how your audience thought of you playing and you will find that in the middle is probably the truth of how well you did.
You will always have days that you though you did terrible, and your audience will inform you that were the next best thing since sliced bread. Be careful not to be overly critical of yourself or fall into the trap of perfectionism. Guitar is ultimately meant to be fun, and a pleasure to play on.
