Advice from someone who knows about guitars?
I want to learn guitar so I’m looking at guitars. I wanted a green guitar so I looked for some and found these.

But I’m a little skeptical since they’re so cheap. What do you think? And do you have any suggestions of guitars for a beginner, particularly a green one? Other colors are fine too though. Thanks!
I could be wrong, but most likely cheap guitars come from China. Material wise they are substandard. There are pros and cons about buying cheap guitars for beginner: Some would say yes because if after playing it you find that you have no interest in it then you are OK because you haven’t spent much. However many beginner guitarists thought that guitar was not good for them and got discouraged because they picked up the wrong guitar. Here is my 2 cents:
- I agree with other opinion here: You should try it before buying. It has to have good playability and good intonation. Good playability means you can play and move between chords easily because the string action (gap between strings and the fretboard) is small (I recommend around 3-4mm on the 12th fret), the neck thickness and shape are OK for your fretting hand. Since you are new to guitar you have to make sure you get the right equipment from the beginning. Don’t buy guitar with high string action, you need to press harder and no beginners will like it!
Good intonation means all notes on the fretboard should be ‘pronounced’ correctly. Cheap guitars tend to sacrifice the pitch accuracy.
- Get one friend with guitar experience to help you searching in the guitar store. Don’t buy the first one you see, always look for comparison. Try the guitar yourself. If it does not feel good in your hand then it probably will never feel good.
- Consider buying a good second hand guitar if you can’t find one that suits your need / budget.
