Will I be approved for a credit card when my debts are cleared?

About six months ago my parents used my debit card and put me in debt about $400. I have applied for credit cards and have repeatedly been denied. I finally have the money to pay off the debt (as I am 18 and putting myself through college on a part time job) and I am wondering if, once the debt is payed, I will be approved for cards?

Paying off the balance can’t hurt anything but, that’s probably not the main problem. Secured credit cards are an option. Secured credit cards usually come with a fine print. 1. you have to put money into usually a savings account with them which will build credit but it doesn’t help you in the short term. 2. there are usually application fees associated with these cards and some of them have a very high APR. I would only use these if it is a last option. If you do decide to go with a secured card stay away from the “next millenium” it has a very high APR and other fees that are too much in my opinion. There are plenty of non secured cards that I would try for first. While applying for a card that you get approved for isn’t bad for your credit, if you’re continually unapproved for cards it looks bad on your credit report.
