Guitar Lessons for children – how to choose the perfect guitar for your child

If your child is more interested in guitar lessons rather than online game is good news. The next step would be choosing the perfect guitar for your child and then finding him a good instructor to help him play his new instrument. It is very important that you choose wisely in buying the right style and guitar for your little one. If you have the wrong guitar while learning can result into slow progress, frustration and poor technique development. Below are some tips on choosing the perfect guitar for your child:

• Toy or Real One? Know if your child is really, really interested in music or is it just a passing fancy? Children are often fickle-minded and what interest them today, won’t be their center of interest tomorrow. Before investing your money in a real guitar, be sure that your child is genuinely into music.
• Ask your child what he or she wants? What color does she prefer? What type of music would they want to play? Bear in mind that your child is the one who will own the guitar and not you. So buying with their preference being considered will make them more motivated to hold the guitar and practice more often.
• Age is considered to be a general guideline to follow when buying guitar for your child. This can be very helpful in determining the right size of the guitar. Of course, you would want your child’s right arm and shoulder to fit perfectly around the guitar, preventing shoulder strain. The left hand should be able to reach the end of the neck comfortably, so the child can effortlessly play the instrument. Here are a few guidelines to follow:

• For toddlers age 3-6 choose ¼ to ½ size guitar, depending on the height of the child.
• For those in grade school age 7 to 12 can have a 3/4 size guitar and
• For children above 13 years old and above he or she can have 4/4 size or a full size guitar

• You should know the basic types of guitar to choose from. Classical guitars are said to be the most preferred beginner’s guitar for children. It has nylon strings and the softest and quietest sound among the three types of guitars. He or she can play it using the fingernails or can be strummed. An electric guitar is played using an amplifier. It has steel strings that are easier and thinner to utilized compare to that of the Acoustic Guitar. They are usually played using picks but your child can use his or her fingers as well. Lastly, the acoustic guitars posses steel strings and a brighter, louder sound. Like the electric guitar, it can be played either buy using your fingers or a pick.
• As a parent, you don’t have to spend a fortune in buying your child’s first guitar. You really should not spend much just in case your child losses interest in his or her guitar lessons. If he proves to be a real music enthusiast, buy him or her real guitar created by a real manufacturer. Avoid cheap guitars that can be easily destroyed. Check your budget and find a decent, real guitar that is suitable for your child’s guitar lessons.
