Do I need AC or DC voltage for a hot wire foam cutter?

I am planning on making some hot wire foam cutters for some halloween projects. I have seen several different ways to make them, but I am wondering if I need AC or DC voltage, or does it matter. How many volts? Around what watts and amps should I be at? I will be using guitar strings.

either will work, as this just needs electric power which is converted to heat.
