Jasmine by Takamine S35 – Budget Guitar Provides Excellent Training

It is said that when a musician can make great music with a crappy instrument, making music on an excellent instrument would be a piece of cake. The Jasmine by Takamine S35, while it is not really a crappy instrument, it does have a bit of resistance that both beginning and experienced guitarists will certainly feel. Players can identify a few good reasons why the S35 is good guitar for learning and improvement.

The S35 is just like most Jasmine by Takamine guitars in terms of the materials that it’s made out of. It is a laminate guitar with a spruce top, nato back and sides, a rosewood bridge and fingerboard, and chrome-plated tuners. It also comes with a pickguard and has a standard-sized, dreadnought-type body shape that contributes greatly to its sound volume. It does not have any electronics of sort to amplify the guitar. A guitar player can then amplify it using an external microphone, a contact mic like a DiMarzio DP136 Super Natural Plus, or have it installed with a piezo pickup and preamp system.

The S35 is a laminate guitar and so it is unreasonable to expect the same degree of resonance that an all-solid-wood guitar can provide. However, given that it is built with Takamine artisanship, one can expect the guitar to sound reasonably good given its price range. Players can easily get a good bang for their buck by buying the guitar, especially those who are interested in developing their guitar playing skills. The S35 has a relatively high action. This may seem undesirable for some individuals because a high-action guitar would be more difficult to play.

The benefits of high action, however, is that it builds strength and skill. A guitarist who can play well using a guitar with a high action will definitely be able to play with ease on a guitar with lower action. Some guitarists think that playing on a high-action guitar is essential for building those finger calluses that are useful in playing the guitar. This, however, runs contrary to the belief of a classical guitarist like Alexander Vynograd, who thinks that left-hand fingers must remain free of calluses for that gentle tone.

Is the Jasmine by Takamine S35 a great guitar? For training purposes, this guitar is worth the money you pay for it. It has a list price of $169 but it can be bought off the street for more than 50% off of the list price. Performing with it, however, is another story. The high action can make a player feel more tired and tense due to the greater amount of strength needed to play. The best use of the S35 would be to use the guitar for practice to build skill and then use another guitar for a gig.
